More info on the project
In our job we daily meet various kinds of screw nuts like heavy hex, nylon insert lock, jam, wing, cap, square, prevailing torque lock, coupling, slotted and many other.
In this video, we are making a screw nut that is consisted of two parts for an English wheel restoration. This two-pieces nut is a part of a mechanism that we took into consideration to make our English wheel ergonomic and usable. The reason why is consisted by two parts is that both sides of the screw have bigger diameter than the point where the fold is so it is impossible to be placed as any other common nut.
Initially, we created the spots where the two pieces are connected. After we created these spots we cut the piece into two other pieces. Then, we screwed the two pieces together again and we modified them on the lathe till reaching their final form. On that piece, we made some space where a lever can be placed to exert more power. At these two sides of this odd nut, we made sockets for two thrust bearings. The purpose of these bearings is to absorb the rubbing from the vertical power exerted by the screw during the function of the machine.
Afterwards, we separated the nut into two parts and we put them in the oven that we made to harden and blueing in order to make the nut hard and resistant to oxidation. Later, we put the pieces to the English wheel and the outcome of it was amazing as the engine was working in excellence. Spinning the nut, the die of the English wheel below approaches the die above and vice versa. The mechanism is very fast and convenient and the restoration is excellent!
